Curso de Inglês para Fins Académicos | English for Academic Purposes

With the internationalisation of higher education and research, developing communication skills in English is essential for all those in university education and academia. These communication skills include the ability to produce accurate written texts in English such as articles and research papers, to read academic texts effectively and efficiently, as well as participate in academic discussions, debates and give oral presentations/present papers.

This English for Academic Purposes course is designed to help you improve your overall use of English in the academic context. It will focus on consolidating your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and strategies that are necessary to produce more accurate academic writing and to speak more fluently.

 

Requirements

You need to have at least a B2 level of English to attend this course.

 

Target Group

This 30h course is aimed at participants who are involved in higher education and academia. It will be particularly useful for faculty members, researchers and students in higher education.

Aims and Objectives

This English for Academic Purposes course is designed to help you improve your overall use of English in the academic context. It will focus on consolidating your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and strategies that are necessary to produce more accurate academic writing and to speak more fluently.

The main course objectives are:

  • To develop participants’ academic reading, writing and speaking skills through the consolidation of grammar and academic vocabulary;
  • To develop participants’ academic writing skills through the practice of strategies to write abstracts, introductions, reviews, discussions and conclusions sections, to use paraphrasing, integrate sources in writing and prepare for publication;
  • To provide exposure to and practice of academic speaking skills to develop fluency for discussions, debates and oral presentations.

 

Instructors

Jean Antunes is a PhD candidate in Linguistics at the University of Évora and also a researcher at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES/CEAUL). He is a certified teacher of  English since 1997 and has worked in a variety of academic settings in Brazil, the UK, East Africa and Portugal.

Sheila Brannigan is a certified teacher of English since 2000. She is a graduate in Fine Arts (Middlesex University, England), has a Master's in History of Art (The Open University, England) and a Master's in Applied Linguistics (Birmingham University, England). She is currently a PhD candidate at FCSH-UNL, researching shifting positions photographers take in their depiction of American urban communities (Visual Culture).

Uma turma a distância (zoom) e uma turma presencial (na FLUL), devendo o aluno dar nota da sua preferência no momento da inscrição. 

Requisitos:

Nível B2 completo do QECRL (a aferir através de um teste de colocação em nível)

O pagamento do curso deverá ser feito em duas vezes: 50% no momento da inscrição e 50% até ao final da primeira semana do curso.
